Staying Safe on Holden Beach
Your suitcases are packed, vacation is right around the corner, and you cannot contain your excitement another second. We get it – we're just as excited for you to get to Holden Beach and enjoy your seaside escape as you are!
At Hobbs Realty, we want our guests to have a relaxing and unforgettable vacation. Above all, we want you to stay safe as you make camp on our sandy shores. Before jumping into the surf, make sure you brush up on these helpful safety tips that will keep you and your family safe at all times.
Beach Safety Tips
1. Protect Yourself from the Sun
Dehydration and sunburn can happen very fast at the beach. If you plan to be at the beach for hours, remember to drink plenty of water and fluids to stay cool and refreshed. Keep sunscreen on hand and continue to apply often, especially after swimming. If you're staying at the beach for the majority of the day, especially in the afternoon when the sun is the most intense, get that umbrella set up in the sand so you can find shade as needed.
2. Swim with a Buddy and Always Supervise Children
It's much safer to swim in groups than alone. If that's not possible, make sure there's someone on shore watching you in case of an emergency. If you have children, remain close or hold on to them when they're swimming. Even in shallow waters, wave action can cause someone to lose their footing. You may also want to put younger children in life jackets or use flotation devices for further safety precautions.
3. Look Out for Aquatic Life
Certain coastal "residents" such as jellyfish, sea urchins, stingrays, and sharks are dangerous and can turn your relaxing day at the beach into an anxious wait at the local clinic. Try to avoid these sea creatures, as they sometimes show up on or near the shore. If you see any, leave the water as quickly and quietly as possible and inform your fellow beach-goers. Other helpful tips include leaving the shiny jewelry at home and avoid swimming at dusk during aquatic life feeding times!
4. Pay Attention to Rip Currents
A rip current is a flow of water moving in the offshore direction. They don't pull you under, but they can pull you out to sea much faster than you can swim. Holden Beach does not have lifeguards, so it's very important to check with our Town Hall and NOAA for warnings on rip currents and unsafe water conditions. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, remain calm and never fight against it. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current, and then swim towards the shoreline.
5. Don't Ignore Approaching Storms
Lightning is dangerous, especially at the beach. If you see lightening or hear thunder, get out of the water immediately! Thunderstorms can pop-up unexpectedly at the beach and pass quickly, so be aware of weather conditions!
Vacationing at the beach is supposed to be a fun and relaxing time, and the more you and your family are informed about beach safety, the less likely you'll run into any problems. Safe travels, hope to see you at Holden Beach soon!
